stETH Market Intelligence — August 2026 Monthly Report

Correction — published Sep 7, 2026. This August monthly report carried Lido's TVL at $18.7B at month-end. That figure came from an aggregator table whose own dollar column priced ETH near $2,105 while every venue quoted $2,400–2,500; corrected to the Aug 31 close it reads ~$23.3B. Every share-of-market figure in section 4 that uses $18.7B as its numerator is therefore understated. We are not republishing a corrected share until every row on that board is priced on one date. See the September 7 data report. Update, Sep 15: this report also carries cumulative rewards paid at $3.085B since 2020 (its late-August read), while lido.fi's counter now reads $2.107B. A cumulative counter cannot fall, so one of the two is wrong — the metric is frozen in the September 7 data report's ledger until they reconcile.

1. August in one page

One sentence captures the month: staking's own numbers barely moved, and the rate they compete against moved decisively. The verified yield record runs from 2.51% APY on Jan 5 to 2.17% on Aug 15 — a 34-basis-point compression over roughly seven months — and then the record changes metric rather than direction, ending the month at a 2.4% frontend APR (roughly 2.16% net of Lido's 10% fee). What changed on Aug 28 was the other side of the comparison: Chair Warsh's first Jackson Hole keynote pushed September hike odds from ~35% to 56–60% and the 2-year Treasury to 4.34%, leaving a ~2.2-point gap between staked ETH's net yield and the risk-free alternative. That is the widest in this site's record, and it reframes every argument for holding an LST.

Position held while the backdrop turned. Lido's TVL went from $17.9B to $18.7B (+4.5%); the peg absorbed the month's only genuine macro shock without a discount; LDO swung from a mid-August low near $0.29 to a $0.4007 close on Aug 23 and back to $0.3527 by Aug 30 — a ~38% peak-to-trough spread and a -12.0% final week. Bitcoin, meanwhile, closed its best August since 2017 at +26% month-to-date.

Read this first — what this monthly can and cannot claim. stETHHub published its first edition on Aug 27, 2026. This report is compiled from two weekly snapshots (Aug 27 and Aug 31), dated state anchors carried from Aug 13–15, and news coverage of Aug 17–30. There are no verified Aug 1 prints in our record, so we publish no month-open-to-close percentage change for yield, supply or price. Where a monthly delta would normally sit, this edition names the gap instead of filling it.

2. The yield corridor through August

Every reading below carries its own date and source, because the month's most common error was comparing numbers measured differently:

DateReadingMetricSource
Jan 5, 2026stETH 2.51%APYDefiLlama
Aug 13, 2026Network gross yield ~2.6%; staking ratio 34.7% (ATH)Gross / ratioStaking Rewards via KuCoin
Aug 15, 2026stETH 2.17%; rETH 2.18%APYDefiLlama
Aug 31, 2026Lido 2.4% gross; ~2.16% net (DERIVED)APRstake.lido.fi via CoinLaw

Did the yield rise in August? Not verifiably. The 2.17%-to-2.4% step crosses from an APY on one source to an APR on another; APY compounds, APR does not, and the sources differ. The honest statement is narrow: the last like-for-like stETH APY print is 2.17% (Aug 15), and the current frontend reads 2.4% APR. Anyone telling you yields "jumped" this month is comparing across that boundary.

The month's genuinely new contribution is the fee-honest cross-provider board, read Aug 31 from a single table so the comparison is finally apples to apples:

ProviderGross APRFeeNet (approx.)
Frax (sfrxETH)2.80%10%~2.52%
Binance (wBETH)2.46%10%~2.21%
Lido (stETH)2.4%10%~2.16%
Coinbase (cbETH)2.83%25%~2.12%
Rocket Pool (rETH)2.00%14%~1.72%

Sorted by net rather than gross, the ranking inverts: Lido's 2.16% edges past cbETH's 2.12% despite the lower headline rate, because a 25% fee consumes cbETH's advantage. Gross-only league tables hide exactly this. A caveat we will keep printing until it expires: this table comes from a new source, so its levels are a re-baseline rather than a continuation of the DefiLlama series — from September the source is frozen and true month-over-month provider deltas begin.

3. Week by week: what the month actually produced

Week of Aug 17–23 — a liquidity rally Lido had no hand in. The SEC floated its Regulation Crypto Assets proposal (Aug 18); the Treasury doubled its long-bond buybacks, igniting roughly $3B of crypto short liquidations in 24 hours (Aug 19); Bitcoin tagged $72,408 on Aug 21, its highest since the June 2 flash crash. The week closed with the market up more than 20%, Ether +28%, XRP +46%, Solana +24% and TRON the laggard at +3.4%. LDO rode it from $0.3060 (Aug 17) to $0.3643 (Aug 22), roughly +19% — then fell 1.7% on the final day while peers rose. Protocol facts did not move; positioning did.

Week of Aug 24–30 — the macro turn. The Bank of Korea hiked to 3.00% on Aug 27, tightening before the Fed spoke. Warsh's Aug 28 debut keynote then repriced September odds from ~35% to 56–60% and lifted the 2-year to 4.34%. Crypto took it on the chin the next morning: BTC -3.43% to $77,364, ETH -3.08% to $2,425 (Aug 29). By the window's close Bitcoin had recovered toward $79,500 and the monthly tally still read +26%. LDO gave back the previous week's gains and more, finishing -12.0%.

Set side by side, the two weeks make the month's argument: a liquidity-driven rally lifted everything including LDO, and the first genuine rate shock took it straight back. Neither week contained a Lido-specific catalyst.

4. The LST board at month-end

From the freshest aggregator table (read Aug 31), with 30-day TVL change where the source reports it:

ProtocolETH stakedValue30-day TVL change
Lido (stETH)8,863,785$18.71B—
Binance (wBETH)~3.70M$7.80B+0.22%
Rocket Pool (rETH)438,324$922.87M−22.75%
StakeWise (V2)359,098$756.06M−8.46%
Liquid Collective (lsETH)352,251$741.64M+0.35%
mETH Protocol230,736$485.80M−20.58%
Coinbase (cbETH)138,993$292.64M+4.13%
Frax (sfrxETH)53,835$113.35M—

The dollar column is the source's own and prices ETH at roughly $2,105–2,111, below the ~$2,500 we carry as this month's snapshot. Re-based at our price, Lido's 8.86M ETH would read ~$22.2B (DERIVED). We print the source column as published and flag the gap rather than silently re-pricing it.

Three reads, all computed from the rows above. One: the seven non-Lido protocols together hold 5.27M ETH worth $11.11B, and wBETH alone takes $7.80B of that — about 70%. Against the $29.82B combined board, Lido is ~63% and Lido plus wBETH ~89%. "Lido dominance" critiques that ignore custodial wBETH are measuring half the board. Two: the decentralized tier bled all month — rETH -22.75% and mETH -20.58% over 30 days while cbETH (+4.13%) and wBETH (+0.22%) grew. The field is consolidating into one protocol plus one exchange, not diversifying. Three: "who is #2" now has a decisive answer in wBETH, which makes share-of-stake arguments testable rather than rhetorical.

On Lido's share of all staked ETH, the month ends unresolved: 9.63M ÷ 41.89M = ~23% using lido.fi's counter, or 8.86M ÷ 41.89M = ~21% using the aggregator's. Both numerators are also date-mismatched against the Aug 13 denominator. We print the range rather than a single number.

5. Ethereum staking: saturation, held

No fresher verified read emerged during the month than the Aug 13 anchors, so they are carried with their date rather than quietly refreshed: 41.89M ETH staked, a 34.7% staking ratio (all-time high), ~789K active validators, 0.86% annualized net inflation, ~2.6% network gross yield. A third-party table this month cited ~39M ETH staked and a 900+ operator set — different vintages and counting bases, which we flag rather than average.

Lido's own infrastructure, per its scorecard (late-August read): 600+ node operators, 222 Community Staking Module operators including 124 solo or community stakers, 35 Simple DVT clusters, 98.67% network performance and $3.085B in rewards paid since 2020. The Earn vault layer, launched into this yield environment, stood at $199.9M (EarnETH) and $40.3M (EarnUSD). Read against section 2, the timing is not mysterious: a protocol squeezed on basis points builds products around the stake instead.

The structural story of the month is unchanged from the year's: participation at record highs, rewards diluted across a record validator set, and a protocol responding commercially rather than through the base rate. What changed is section 8.

6. Peg, redemptions and the one real test

No stETH discount surfaced in any whitelisted source during August. That includes the month's only genuine stress event: through the Aug 29 repricing day, when ETH fell 3.1% and BTC 3.4%, stETH read $2,499 against ETH's $2,487–2,555 on Aug 31 reads, and derivatives stayed orderly into the event. The mechanism our founding data report specified — that peg stress arrives with leverage spikes rather than with orderly books — was not triggered.

Two things stay on the honest-missing list. Redemption-queue depth: we have found no verifiable figure, and we will not quote one. Same-day discount tracking: the readings above span source dates, so formal discount tracking begins in September with matched-date reads. One clean pass through a macro shock is not a guarantee; it is the first data point of this site's lifetime, and it passed.

7. LDO: a ~38% peak-to-trough month, ending lower

Every verified print we hold, in order:

DateLDONote
Aug 13–22$0.29–0.37 bandDaily logs; $0.29 is the month's low on our record
Aug 17$0.3060Risk-on ahead of UK CPI
Aug 19$0.3045Squeeze day
Aug 21$0.3405Flash PMI day
Aug 22$0.3643-1.7% that day while peers rose
Aug 23$0.4007Coinbase close; the month's high
Aug 24$0.3719—
Aug 25$0.3614—
Aug 27$0.3665Coinbase close; a tracker read the same day at $0.336 (conflict, flagged)
Aug 30$0.3527Coinbase close; -12.0% from the Aug 23 high

From the $0.29 low to the $0.4007 high is a spread of roughly 38% inside a single month, and the token ended August nearer the middle of that range at $0.3527. Market cap: ~$295M (DERIVED on the 836.3M circulating supply two sources agree on) — down from a tracker print of $301M on a 895.8M basis, a comparison we mark not comparable because the supply basis changed underneath it.

The interpretation is uncomfortable but consistent. Nothing protocol-specific happened to Lido in August: TVL rose, no governance shock, no incident. LDO rallied with a fiscal-liquidity squeeze and sold off with a rates repricing — the behaviour of a long-duration, no-cash-flow asset. We do not publish a month-to-date percentage change for LDO, because we hold no verified Aug 1 print to measure from.

8. The macro turn: staking's competition repriced

On Aug 28, Warsh's first Jackson Hole keynote put a hawkish hierarchy on the record: 12-month PCE at 3.7%, six-month annualized at 4.1%, and 54% of the PCE basket's 199 components up more than 3% year-over-year against a ~32% two-decade pre-pandemic average. The 2% target is "firm and fixed." Financial conditions are "hard to describe as restrictive." Forward guidance has "overstayed its welcome." Markets moved immediately: September hike odds ~35% → 56–60%, the 2-year to 4.34% (+11bps, a one-month high), the 10-year to ~4.72%, the dollar +0.6%, gold -3% through $4,500.

The consequence for staked ETH is arithmetic, not sentiment:

  • Staked ETH nets ~2.16% after Lido's fee. The 2-year Treasury pays 4.34%. The gap is ~2.2 points in the risk-free asset's favour.
  • On 10 ETH (~$25,000 at the ~$2,500 snapshot): roughly $540 a year staked through Lido, versus ~$1,085 in 2-year Treasuries. The ~$545 difference is the price the market currently charges for ETH-upside participation plus on-chain composability.

That is the month's structural fact, and it is why section 5's product response matters more than section 2's basis points. Liquid staking cannot sell yield in this regime; it sells liquidity, integration and composability. Every scenario in this month's deep dive is built on that sentence.

9. Data-quality ledger for August

This site's contract is that errors get published rather than edited away. Everything below was corrected or disclosed during the month:

Coverage gaps, stated plainly: no verified Aug 1 prints, so no month-open-to-close deltas for yield, supply or price; no staking-state read fresher than Aug 13; no full LST sector wrap fresher than Aug 14 ($35.48B). Next month's ledger should shrink, because the fixes are procedural rather than one-off.

What August ultimately proved is a separation this report has tried to keep visible all month: Lido's position and the price of Lido's yield are different variables. Position — TVL, share of stake, peg integrity — was stable to improving across the month. The price of the yield, meanwhile, was set in a market Lido does not participate in: a hawkish turn at Jackson Hole raised the riskless alternative by more than the whole seven-month compression it took to squeeze staking down to 2.17% APY. When the riskless rate moves more in one speech than your yield moved in seven months, "is staking worth it" is no longer a staking question. That is the month's summary judgment, and it is why the September watchlist leans macro before it leans protocol.

10. September watchlist

  • The September 15–16 FOMC. A 56–60% hike probability, a chair who refuses to guide, and every LST valuation keyed to the outcome. A 25bps move would push the risk-free benchmark toward ~4.6% and widen the staking gap to ~2.4 points.
  • Same-day supply re-verification. Our own outstanding item: reading lido.fi's counter and an aggregator on the same day should settle the 9.63M-vs-8.86M conflict and repair the failed cross-check.
  • The frozen yield source. With the cross-provider table held constant, September delivers the first true month-over-month provider deltas instead of another re-baseline.
  • stETH discount tracking with matched-date reads. Same-day secondary prints against ETH, so the peg claim becomes measurable rather than observed.
  • ETF flow direction. Desk commentary flagged outflows limiting the August rebound; a reversal would be the first genuinely staking-positive institutional signal on our record.
  • The 10% fee debate. In a regime where the fee competes with a free 4.34% alternative, silence in Lido governance would itself be information.
  • Next PCE and CPI prints against the "clearly and at sufficient speed" standard the chair set on Aug 28.

FAQ

Why is this monthly report thin on month-long trends?

Because stETHHub published its first edition on Aug 27. Our verified record starts mid-August: two weekly snapshots, state anchors dated Aug 13–15, and news coverage of Aug 17–30. There are no verified Aug 1 prints, so no month-open-to-close change is claimed.

Did stETH's yield rise during August?

Not verifiably. The last like-for-like APY print is 2.17% (DefiLlama, Aug 15); the current 2.4% is an APR from a different source. APY compounds, APR does not — the two are not a trend.

What is Lido's share of staked ETH at month-end?

Somewhere between ~21% and ~23%, depending on which supply reading you take (8.86M or 9.63M) against 41.89M ETH staked — and both numerators are date-mismatched against the Aug 13 denominator. We print the range and resolve it with same-day reads in September.

Did the stETH peg break at any point in August?

No discount surfaced in any whitelisted source, including through the Aug 29 repricing day when ETH fell 3.1%. Redemption-queue depth remains unverified and is deliberately withheld.

Why is there no August supply figure for stETH?

Two sources disagree by about 9% — 9.63M ETH on lido.fi's counter (Aug 27) against 8.86M on an undated aggregator read. Publishing either as the month's number would be a guess.

How much did the Jackson Hole speech actually cost stakers?

It did not change staking rewards; it changed the alternative. A 4.34% two-year Treasury against ~2.16% net staking yield is a ~2.2-point gap — about $545 a year per 10 ETH compared with holding Treasuries.
